Heritage
A little history.
The nine Similan islands were declared a national park in 1982 and the Surin group in 1981, which is why they look today much as they did a century ago: no roads, no resorts, and a closed season each May to November while the monsoon lets the reefs recover. The Moken, the Andaman's sea nomads, still keep a village on Surin Tai and have navigated these waters for generations — their reading of the sea famously saved the community in 2004.
