Heritage
A little history.
Patong was banana and coconut plantation reached only by boat until a road was cut over the hills in the 1970s. The first bungalows went up on the sand, backpackers followed, and within a generation it became Phuket's best-known bay. The 2004 tsunami swept the beachfront; the rebuilt promenade, Loma Park and the Banzaan market behind it all date from the years after. Come early and it is still a swimming beach, with the boats and the sunset crowd arriving later.
