Heritage
A little history.
The Big Buddha was begun in 2004 and is still being finished, funded entirely by donations and faced in Burmese white jade marble; from the Nakkerd ridge it looks over Chalong, Kata and the Andaman at once. Wat Chalong, in the plain below, is the island's most revered temple — it sheltered the leaders of the 1876 tin miners' rebellion, and the pagoda at its centre holds a splinter of bone said to be a relic of the Buddha.
