Heritage
A little history.
Built on tin money in the late 1800s, the old town's arcaded shophouses were modelled on Penang and Malacca: shuttered windows, five-foot walkways and Chinese courtyards behind European façades. Thalang, Dibuk and Soi Romanee have been restored street by street, and the town's Peranakan kitchens — hokkien mee, moo hong, o-tao — are what island residents actually eat.
