A little history.
Aswan marked ancient Egypt's southern frontier and supplied the granite used in monuments across the kingdom — an unfinished obelisk still lies in its quarry. The Temple of Philae, dedicated to Isis, was moved stone by stone to Agilkia Island when the High Dam raised the river, and Nubian villages line the banks in painted blues and ochres.
