A little history.
Salzburg grew wealthy as an independent prince-archbishopric through the salt trade. Its remarkably preserved baroque centre, crowned by Hohensalzburg Fortress, is now UNESCO listed and inseparable from the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born here in 1756.
